This was a wine I noticed Cambridge Wine Merchants had got in, and it was a new wine to the company. So, since I’m a big fan of Riesling, I thought it would be worth a try. Not only is this a new wine for me, but it is a new producer as well. I won’t quite go as far as to say I’m excited to try this, but I am looking forward to it.
In the glass
Nice, clear. Medium lemon, or perhaps some straw. Nice, but unremarkable. And yes, ‘nice’ was in my notes twice for the appearance. Visually, it’s the sort of wine WSET would approve of.
The nose
Possibly a hint of lemon, or lime. But nothing I’d put money on. After the first sniff or two, I can’t pick it up any more. Perhaps the initial whiff was, once again, a case of me imagining things.
The palate
Very crisp. I think some reviewers would call this ‘racy’ acidity, whatever exactly that is supposed to mean. On my first few sips, there almost seems to be a hint of sweetness, before you are overwhelmed by the acidity. Lemon drops or some such? It was like a small hit of sugar and then POW the acidity takes over.
It’s actually a rather one dimensional wine. The acidity pretty much overpowers everything. There’s a bit of citrus on the palate, but even that has trouble holding its own. The wine strikes me as generally out of balance, which is a shame, since I had high hopes for this.
Rating
‘It’s wine’ on visuals, and, regrettably, ‘Meh’ overall. Usually, once I open a bottle to taste it, I keep going, company or not. This one is back in the fridge. I really tried hard to like it, but Meh is the best I can do, I’m afraid.
Maybe I got a duff bottle. A Vivino rating of 3.8 would suggest so. Or perhaps it’s just another indication of how much a role smell plays in wine.
Sustainability
Didn’t find anything on their website, which leads to me to think there’s not much in terms of sustainability going on. I could be wrong, and would like to be, but it tends to be something people boast about.
