The last time I looked after the country estate and the animals, Augustus, the cockerel, decided he was my friend. Nay, even my shadow. Whenever I went outside, he followed me around. This was heartwarming, until MT in a message commented that Augustus had been particularly needy of late. It seems that I can’t even make friends with a chicken on my own merits. I guess I’m not really surprised.
At any rate, as a thank you for the fact that all the animals managed to survive my care, TE and MT, upon their return, gave me this wine, since it has a cockerel on it. To mark, I suppose, me being the focus of Augustus’s neediness. Or something.
In the glass
Light ruby, clear. For some reason, it calls to mind cherry cough drops. Those oval ones. It’s pretty, though not quite as sparkly as some when held up to the light.
The nose
Yes, but at first not sure what. Cherries. Redcurrants. I think I need more descriptors for red fruit scents. A very faint hint of undergrowth. Something a bit darker under the red fruits. It’s like the woods beckoning as you frolic in a sunlit meadow.
The palate

Light, dry, a bit sour. Not so much cherry on the palate as I was expecting. More, well, something else. Raspberry I’ll go with. More redcurrant as well. Juicy. Refreshing. The acidity isn’t obvious, but gives it a nice mouth-watering aspect to it.
It’s got a nice balance to it.
It’s not a serious pinot noir, but a light, enjoyable one. Eminently quaffable. Good for just drinking. Doesn’t inspire long, reflective thoughts on the general state of the world, but inclines one to think ‘Yeah, this is pretty nice.’
Rating

Yummy-plus. Pretty on visuals. My first thought was ‘yummy’ as opposed to ‘yummy-plus,’ but I find myself drinking it just to enjoy it as I’m writing up yesterday’s notes into this blog. So that says something.
Goes well with food. The initial tasting – after tasting it on its own, I had it with spinach and feta parcels in filo. Today, as I’m re-affirming my impressions, I’m having it with cheese and oatcakes.
I’ve also decided I’m a fan of red Leicester, but that may not be entirely relevant here.
