It’s Grüner Veltliner. Hence, I wanted to try it. I had been in M&S, doing other shopping, when somehow this caught my eye. Being a bit of a Grüner Veltliner fan, as you may have noticed, I figured I’d try it. Not like I don’t have a backlog of other wines to review. This got moved up to the front of the queue because I was in the mood for something crisp and white. And I hoped this would fit the bill.
In the glass
Clear. Really clear. Medium lemon. It’s pretty enough, but nothing special.
The nose
Nope. Nothing. Repeated tries return the same result.
The palate
Medium body, dry. Decent, not very crisp. The first flavour I noted was ‘straw.’ Then citrus. Here, for me, the lime is as prominent as the lemon. Green apple skins, and a hint of white pepper. Extra points for clarity / distinctiveness of flavours on the palate. Maybe I was just on form when tasting this, but I was pleasantly surprised by this.
It has an unexpectedly long, citrussy finish. It does want a bit more acidity to it. It’s not flabby or anything like that, but I’m left feeling it could use a touch more acidity, to give it a bit more character.
Rating
Yummy. It’s Wine on visuals. It’s fine, but nothing I can get excited about. It would work well as a mid-week wine, where you aren’t really concerned about the finer points of the wine, but want something to drink with dinner. Good for uncomplicated drinking, as a friend might put it. It’s not a wine that is definitely going on my repeat-buy list. Having said that, if I were stuck with M&S as my only choice for buying wine, I wouldn’t rule this out.
Sustainability
Made from ‘certified sustainable’ vineyards. The website of the producer is ‘under maintenance,’ so I have been unable to look into this further.
