Recently, the Countryside Faction, as they are known, took a holiday to Greece. When I saw them after they had returned, they gave me this bottle. Also, some Greek cheese, which I had with the wine when tasting it. So I went into this having no idea what to expect.
In the glass
‘Red wine.’ That’s my first note on the appearance. With insight like that, I should probably work in the wine trade. Oh, wait. I do. Never mind. A medium, tending towards dark ruby, fading at the edges. A hint of brick?
The nose
Stewed something. Some sort of compote. Plums, perhaps? And why do I always think of compote with this smell? Surely there’s a descriptor more relevant to most people? Some black cherry as well, I think.
The palate
Medium body. Soft tannins. Dark fruits. Black cherries again, and some other stuff. It’s all fruit though. Maybe something like glacé cherries? It brings Christmas pudding to mind, but without the spices. It has a long finish of black cherries. It’s a straightforward wine, but I have no problem with that. The alcohol is a bit out of kilter, though. It’s not a burning sensation, but it is more evident than it should be.
Rating
Yummy overall, ‘It’s Wine’ on visuals. It’s nothing fancy, but it is a pleasant enough wine. It goes well with food, such as stronger cheeses. I went in with no clue what to expect, and came away pleasantly surprised.
