Il Pratello, Morana 2014, Italy

As you may recall, earlier in the year, TY fled the country to avoid having to drink wine with me. (She claimed it was something to do with a job opportunity, but I’m sceptical.)  In the spring, she said she’d be back for a visit. She also said she was in a Sangiovese phase. So I ordered a Sangiovese for when she came to visit. Alas, she never was able to make it. Finally, abandoning the last shreds of hope for a visit in the immediate future, I decided it was time to try this wine. On my own. Without TY. Here are my thoughts.

In the glass

Deep ruby or red or something. It’s dark enough that I don’t think the actual colour matters that much.  Although I keep wondering.  Garnet? Yeah, that will work.  Fades towards the rim.  At any rate, it’s a deep red wine colour.

The nose

Something very faint. Perhaps black cherries, but that might be because I know I’m smelling (or trying to) Sangiovese, and cherries are its hallmark. I’m pretty sure there’s something else as well. Perhaps a hint of cedar, or even spices like cinnamon.

The palate

Medium body. It actually feels a bit watery around the edges, if that makes sense. It probably doesn’t, but that’s the only way I can describe it. It also, despite the age, comes across as ‘bright.’ It’s juicy. It has a decently long finish. A bit of acidity, and the tannins are smooth.

The main flavour on the palate is cherries. Mostly dark ones with a bit of maraschino as well.

In the end, I think it’s not bad, but it’s unremarkable.

Rating

Yummy. It’s wine.  As I noted, it’s fine. It’s nice enough. I think it goes slightly better with food. Egg mayonnaise, as I recall. Homemade. Also yummy. But in the end, it doesn’t do much for me. I don’t dislike it, I just think there are nicer wines to drink out there.
